Hmm, suppose it's customary to have the better side of whatever is to have facing yourself, bit similar to how you put up curtains... was thinking about those earlier. If you have a one-sided curtain then it's always the good side in. Too much ego maybe? Historically? A greed-fed habit that refuses to die? Tis is pretty interesting...
On the coffee mug note though: I believe I don't always drink with my right hand, depends a bit on how you sit, what you're doing etc. For example by computer, if the mouse is my right hand: I'll intuitively pick up the mug with my left instead.
Maybe they were designed for the future all along. O_o
